So you want to elope in New York City? Let me sum this up in one word; iconic. You cannot understate how absolutely epic of an idea this is. However, there’s a few things you have to know before you tackle the big apple. I spent 48 hours in the heart of Manhattan coordinating 8 elopement styled shoots with 12 photographers. My advice can be summed up into 3 major points. Be prepared for people, invest in a good photographer and learn to.. PIVOT!
This might seem a tad obvious but it has to be said. Unless you are preparing to pay thousands to rent out private space in the city, you are going to have people stopping to ooh and ahh. The city has over 8 million residents with an estimated 66 million more visiting in a year. The most iconic moment from this entire experience was having models in the heart of Times Square. This was also simultaneously the most stressful shoot because we were actively asking people to stop crowding around us. Tensions lessened when the group realized that tourists were inevitable. When the photographers stopped focusing on the crowds and began focusing on their craft instead; magic was created. This perfectly leads me into my next point…
I would give this advice to literally anyone who is getting married but in this case it is absolutely crucial. The photographers who thrived at this shoot were the ones who were not intimidated by the chaos, but rather were inspired by it. Being the bystander, I quickly saw the photographers who were comfortable with the hustle and bustle were the ones who created the most stunning shots. They actively were guiding their models and empowering them – which is precisely what you want when escaping to the city for your nuptials. Find a photographer who has experience with the city, knows the ins and outs and confidently will guide you. Keep reading for my favorite recommendations!
Okay, you know I had to include a Friend’s reference when discussing NYC, right? Seriously though, the chaos of this city (especially if you aren’t familiar with it) can be overwhelming at the minimum – if not flat out discouraging. People, weather and always changing Subway lines will make you go slightly insane. If you are someone who wants to elope in the never-sleeping city, I have to assume you are the kind of couple who loves just a little chaos. However, mentally preparing for change of plans and actively embracing those changes will make your eloping experience much more fun.
If the city is calling you and your significant other’s name – GO! I cannot stress how much you will no regret it. This city is intoxicating in all ways and your wedding should always be one you will never forget. If you need some help planning the most iconic elopement ever… let’s chat!
